The purpose of this project was to create an original robot illustration for use as a visual on a website. David started by drawing a rough sketch of the robot with pen and paper, which he then scanned and placed on the bottom layer of the Adobe Illustrator workspace. He changed the transparency level of the sketch layer to 50% to lighten the line work and built the new robot on the layers above the sketch. When the reference was no longer needed, he turned off the visibility of the sketch layer. A variety of overlapping solid color fills and gradient fills were used to create a basic sense of depth and dimension for the robot character. A combination of linear and radial gradients were used for the reflective metal parts and transparency levels created subtle see-through effects for the glassware. David avoided using outlines for most of the illustration except for the eyes and mouth which required a little more definition. The 3D filter was used to create the three dimensional effect on the buttons of the control panel. With the use of a single light source, the result is a believable, retro-futuristic style illustration of a friendly and dapper waiter, who zips effortlessly with his tray to your table to deliver your sparkling water.
